What is sourdough starter?
Sourdough starter is a living culture of wild yeasts and lactic acid bacteria used to raise bread. This natural fermentation gives your bread a delicious sour flavor—improved texture and a crispy crust—and makes it more digestible than bread made with commercial yeast. The starter will live indefinitely if fed regularly.
Why dried starter?
Long shelf life – keeps for months to years when stored dry – easy to store – no refrigeration required – perfect gift – ideal for beginners or as a backup – always available when you want to start. Dried starter is dormant and becomes active when you feed it with flour and water.
Activate and use
Day 1: Mix the dried starter with 50 ml of lukewarm water and 50 grams of flour – stir well – cover with a cloth. Days 2-7: Discard half and add 50 ml of water and 50 grams of flour daily. After 5-7 days, you'll see bubbles and it will smell sour – the starter is now active and ready to bake bread. Store in the refrigerator and feed weekly.
