Felblauwe, roze, paarse of felgroene agaat is bijna altijd gekleurd. Natuurlijke agaat heeft aardse tinten: grijs, beige, crème, bruin en oranje. Bloemagaat, mosagaat en crazy lace agaat danken hun tekening aan de natuur.
Hoe ontstaat de tekening in agaat?
Agaat groeit in holtes van vulkanisch gesteente. Daar zet zich laagje voor laagje kwarts af. Elke laag krijgt een eigen kleur, zo ontstaan de banden. Daardoor is geen agaatschijf hetzelfde.
Mag agaat in water?
Ja. Agaat is hard (6,5 tot 7 op de schaal van Mohs) en kan kort in water. Spoel hem af en droog hem met een zachte doek. Gekleurde agaat kan bij lang zonlicht verbleken, dus zet die niet in een zonnige vensterbank.
