Yoni Steaming: An ancient ritual for modern women

Yoni Stomen: Een oud ritueel voor moderne vrouwen

There are rituals that have been passed down through the centuries, from mother to daughter, from generation to generation. Yoni steaming is one of them. A practice with roots in ancient cultures of Korea, Central America, and Africa – and which is now being embraced again by women who want to live consciously and seek connection with their bodies.

In this article, you'll learn all about what yoni steaming is, how it works, what herbs you can use, and how to turn it into a meaningful ritual.

What is yoni steaming?

Yoni is the Sanskrit word for the female womb – a word that expresses respect and sacredness. Yoni steaming, also known as V-steaming or bajos, is a practice where you sit over a bowl of hot water and dried herbs. The warm steam rises and envelops the pelvic area.

It is not a medical treatment, but a form of self-care and conscious attention to your body. A moment to slow down, feel, and just be.

The history of yoni steaming

In Korea, it is known as chai-yok and was traditionally used after childbirth and around the menstrual cycle. In Central America, it is an ancient practice within indigenous communities. In many African cultures, it is part of female rites of passage.

What all these traditions have in common: the recognition that the female body deserves attention, warmth, and care.

Which herbs are used?

The choice of herbs determines the atmosphere and effect of your steam ritual. At Natuurlijk Gaia, we work with carefully crafted blends, each with its own intention:

  • Mugwort – one of the most traditional yoni steaming herbs, supports the cycle and has a warming effect
  • Raspberry leaf – mild and soothing, traditionally used around menstruation
  • Rose petals – gentle, loving, and connecting with the heart chakra
  • Chamomile – calming and stress-relieving, promotes relaxation
  • Calendula – soothing and mild, ideal for sensitive or recovering skin
  • Lavender – calming and harmonizing
  • Rosemary – grounding and warming
  • Ginger – stimulating and warming, supports circulation

How to do a yoni steaming ritual?

A yoni steaming ritual doesn't have to be complicated. It's about the intention and attention you give to it.

What do you need?

  • A large bowl or special steaming seat
  • Hot water (not boiling – let it cool down a bit)
  • A handful of dried steaming herbs
  • A warm blanket or wrap
  • A quiet, warm room

Step-by-step

  1. Prepare a bowl and add a handful of herbs to hot water. Let steep for 5 minutes.
  2. Test the temperature – the steam should feel pleasantly warm, never hot or burning.
  3. Sit over the bowl, wrap a blanket around your waist to keep the steam contained.
  4. Stay for 15 to 30 minutes. Breathe calmly. Let thoughts come and go.
  5. Afterward, take time to rest and stay warm.

When is yoni steaming suitable?

Yoni steaming can be a wonderful addition to your self-care routine, for example:

  • In the days before your period, if you experience tension or cramps
  • After your period, as a moment of closure and recovery
  • Around the full moon, as a ritual of letting go and renewal
  • In the postpartum period, when your body has sufficiently recovered (always in consultation with a healthcare provider)
  • At times when you need peace, grounding, and connection with yourself

When is yoni steaming not suitable?

Yoni steaming is not suitable for everyone and not in every situation. Do not use it:

  • During pregnancy
  • During menstruation itself
  • With infections, open wounds, or stitches
  • In case of irritation or pain (stop immediately if uncomfortable)

If in doubt, always consult a doctor or midwife.

Make it a ritual

The most beautiful thing about yoni steaming is not just the physical warmth – it's the intention you give to it. Create an atmosphere that suits you: dim the lights, light a candle, place a crystal next to you. Breathe consciously. Be present.

This moment is for you.

At Natuurlijk Gaia, we offer four handmade herbal blends, each tailored to a different intention and phase of your cycle. Discover our Yoni Steaming Herbs collection and find the blend that suits you.
